Fake Coffee? We're Keepin Coffee Real!

We’re going to need to see your human ID to confirm the coffee is real. Between fake coffee and coffee roasting robots we’re all gonna be hanging around consuming things made by bots.

Good Morning - Feb 11th - We’re officially in Basketball/Hockey season. The Birds dominated the Super Bowl. Sounds like it’s gonna be a dark Valentine’s Day in the Kelce/Swift house. What the hell is Galentine’s Day? Never heard of this ‘holiday’ and all the sudden it’s everywhere this year. Bruhentine’s Day will be Feb 15th. We’ll all get together at the bar to discuss why we always remember a gift, but always forget the card. Shout out to all the Gals and Bros during this week of love. Stroll into the 3-day weekend ready to party. Don’t forget to stop and get coffee Friday morning.

This weeks grind:

  • Imposter Coffee: Is coffee OR coffee flavored?

  • SkyNet Coffee Roasters: AI is doing everything. Even roasting coffee.

  • Coffee Choice Helps Heartburn: Don’t give up your fav morning routine.

Check Under the Hood: Is your Coffee Real?

Depending on how you’re buying your coffee for home brewing you may have seen price hikes at checkout. Something we’ve noticed over the last year are shifts in the sellers either raising prices OR lowering the ounces on bags. One of the delivery services I use actually tried to spin this as a benefit to the consumer by lowering their 12oz bags to 10oz bags instead of raising the price. “I’m gonna give you less so you don’t have to pay more”. Yes. This is Real. Not a dig on the coffee, just the message. Worth a try for sure.

There’s a reason high-end products see their items counterfeited on the streets in big cities. We all know that 1 person that wears a Rolex, but we all know it’s a Fauxlex. Now Brazil is seeing this in their coffee. Brazil is seeing products like Official do Brasil enter the market. Coffee officials claim this coffee brand is presenting ground materials that have artificial coffee flavor.

Concerns among Brazil’s coffee roasters about a surge in so-called “fake coffee” products entering the market amid soaring coffee prices. These impostor products—made from coffee byproducts or artificial flavoring rather than actual beans—have drawn criticism for misleading consumers. Brazil’s coffee roasters association, ABIC, is questioning the legality of these offerings and has reached out to government authorities. Meanwhile, manufacturers of the alternative products claim they are catering to budget-conscious consumers and emphasize that their labeling clearly states they’re not selling traditional coffee.

JTD is going to keep it real and supporting local roasters in cities all over the world. You should too!

Hey Siri, Roast My Coffee!

If I walk into Vesta tomorrow and see a T1000 roasting some Ethiopian Geisha I’m walking right out. AI is taking over and coffee was definitely on the list. We may know a few folks out there that got their hands on their very own Bellwether Coffee Roaster. Curious if they already installed the ChatGPT plugin. In fact, local Henderson roaster, Public Works was the first I saw purchase their own machine in town.

Artificial intelligence (AI) is becoming a game-changer in the coffee roasting industry, as it provides unprecedented control over quality and consistency. By integrating advanced AI features into roasting machines, businesses can monitor and adjust factors like temperature, airflow, and drum speed in real-time. This helps maintain precise roast profiles, batch after batch, and ensures customers consistently experience the intended flavors of the coffee.

Beyond consistency, AI is proving to be a powerful tool for streamlining operations. It can handle data collection, manage green coffee inventories, and even optimize workflows in roasteries, freeing up staff to focus on higher-value tasks (playing candy crush). As these technologies continue to evolve, they promise to help roasters further refine their offerings and improve efficiency, keeping them competitive and innovative in an ever-changing industry.

We’ll stick to humans managing their way thru first crack.

Brew without the Burn: The Best Coffee for Acid Sensitivities

We know about 75% of ‘Mericans drink coffee every day. Assuming the other 25% don’t like the taste or possibly quit due to issues described below. Imagine waking up to the delicious scent of a fresh pot of coffee and having to choose between the taste of a perfect cup and heartburn. Follow the science. Some smarter people figured out a way to switch over to methods that reduce your chances of triggering heartburn and acid reflux.

For coffee enthusiasts who experience heartburn or acid reflux, selecting the right brew can make a significant difference. Certain types of coffee are less likely to trigger discomfort:

Dark Roasts: Opting for a dark roast can be beneficial. The extended roasting process reduces the bean's acidity, making the coffee gentler on the stomach. The majority of coffee drinkers go for medium roast (54%), dark roasts come in second at (28%) and just a small amount of java drinkers (10%) choose the light roast for their fav choice.

Cold Brew: Brewing coffee with cold water over an extended period results in a smoother, less acidic beverage, which is easier on the digestive system. The flavors will also knock your socks off.

Decaffeinated Coffee: Finally, a reason to purchase decaf! Since caffeine can aggravate acid reflux symptoms, choosing decaf reduces caffeine intake and may help minimize discomfort.

Additional tips to reduce coffee-related acid reflux include consuming coffee with meals, limiting overall intake, and using paper filters during brewing to trap certain acids.
